Master of Colour Field Painting

Rothko's signature style consists of soft, rectangular bands of colour floating on a canvas, which he meticulously layered to achieve luminosity and depth. His work is characterised by a simplicity of form combined with a use of colour that is deeply expressive. Paintings such as 'Orange and Yellow' (1956) and 'Blue and Grey' (1962) exemplify his approach to creating what he called ""a place"" rather than a picture—a space where viewers could engage in contemplation.

Philosophical and Emotional Depth in Art

Rothko viewed his paintings as dramas and often spoke of the spiritual and existential themes underlying his work. His ambition was to express basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom—through his abstract compositions. This intent is vividly captured in the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas, where his large-scale works envelop the viewer in a tranquil yet intense visual environment designed to inspire inward reflection and meditation.
