Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm dedicates the month of July to "Art & Antiques" – a varied, extensive, and somewhat surprising theme with over 300 lots.
Anyone considering furnishing a manor house should take a closer look at the furniture section, which includes Gothic-style cabinets and bookcases, Baroque desks, gilded Empire mirrors and console tables, a pair of majestic longcase clocks, and a perfectly proportioned armchair by Ephraim Ståhl. The auction also features classical paintings with large canvases by Theodor Billing and Johan Christian Berger, a woven tapestry from Flanders, a pair of late Baroque mirror wall sconces, and a grand garden urn from Höganäs from a time when architects took garden design very seriously. From the curiosity cabinet comes a bottle opener shaped like a lobster claw, an intricately detailed silver desk set from 1859, a delightfully ornate teapot by Adolf Zethelius, and an expressive sculpture from the Ivory Coast. Add to this a wealth of Japanese woodblock prints, several tobacco jars, a pair of altar candlesticks, and various other curiosities, and you have a fine introduction to the "Art & Antiques" theme.
